Siri-Like Voice Transcription Comes to Jailbroken iPhone 4 and 3GS

Siri-Like Voice Transcription Comes to Jailbroken iPhone 4 and 3GS

After numerous attempts to bring Siri to older devices, developers have now succeeded in bringing Siri-like dictation technology to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 through a new jailbreak app called Siri0us.

The jailbreak app isn’t actually a port of Siri’s dictation, however, but it does seem to produce basically the same result. iDownloadblog reports that the dictation seems to work well, and the transcription feature works very quickly using the hack:

Dictation works great on the iPhone 4, transcribing words into text rather quickly. The technology is actually Naunce-based dictation, but the end result is pretty much the same as Apple’s Siri. As you can see in the video, small ads are displayed in the bar above the mic icon. You will need an internet connection for the microphone to show up.

The package only emulates the Siri interface for dictation, but uses the Nuance speech recognition engine. This follows numerous attempts to bring Siri to previous-generation devices, all of which have been limited by the need for an iPhone 4S UDID, and the need for authentication by Apple’s server.

Even though this isn’t really the same as porting Siri’s dictation to older devices, it does achieve the same effect, and is a step in the right direction. Check out the video below to see it in action:
