Lock Screen Weather: Add Live Local Weather to the iPhone’s Lock Screen Without Jailbreaking

CrowdCafe’ has released Lock Screen Weather for iPhone ($0.99, App Store link)- an app that displays local weather information (complete with graphics) on your iPhone’s lock screen without needing a jailbreak.

The app manages to trick iOS by playing a silent track through the iPod app and using the weather information as album art. It’s a pretty clever workaround, and after fiddling with it for a few minutes, it seems to work quite well.

The app can provide current weather conditions and a five day forecast in tens of thousands of cities around the world, automatically updates based on your location, and supports both Fahrenheit (℉) and Celsius temperature (℃) scales.

I’m sure Apple won’t be too thrilled about this workaround (even through the developer isn’t technically breaking any rules), so there’s no saying how long will remain in the App Store. My recommendation would be to snap it up as soon as possible.

The only drawbacks are that you won’t be able to play music through the iPod app, Pandora, or other similar apps while Lock Screen Weather is running, and you might not be able to hear notification sounds (such as for a text message). Still, it’s a pretty clever way around Apple’s strict policies.

Lock Screen Weather is available now for $0.99 in the App Store (link).
