iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Jailbreak Saw Over One Million Downloads in Less Than 24 Hours

Swarms of users rushed to jailbreak their A5-based iOS devices following Friday’s release of the first untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, with Joshua Hill (more commonly known as @p0sixninja) of the Chronic Dev Team reporting that over 1 million copies of the jailbreak were downloaded less than 24 hours after the launch.

The release was met with such extraordinary demand that many were unable to install the jailbreak at first due to server flooding, although the servers have since been bolstered to keep up with demand.

These numbers were recorded even prior to the Windows launch of the Absinthe jailbreak tool, which likely spawned a fair amount of response itself.

An official post on the iPhone Dev Team blog reveals the actual number of devices that were jailbroken over the weekend, totaling nearly one million (a bit less than the actual number of downloads, which is to be expected):

  • 491,325 new iPhone (4S) devices
  • 308,967 new iPad 2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken iPad 2 devices

This brings the grand total up to 953,232 new iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days – a pretty remarkable response, and a solid indication that jailbreaking is still alive and well, even among devices running iOS 5.
