Samsung Isn’t Worried About Apple’s HDTV (But They Should Be)

Samsung Isn’t Worried About Apple’s HDTV (But They Should Be)

There’s been plenty of buzz about Apple’s rumored connected TV since Steve Jobs told Walter Isaacson he’d “cracked” the idea in Steve Jobs. Given Apple’s disruptive nature, and the possibility that they could be preparing to disrupt the television industry, you’d think TV manufacturers might be worried.

Samsung, however, is not worried at all. Speaking to Pocket-lint, Samsung AV product manager Chris Moseley downplayed the importance of an Apple television, stating that it’s really all about picture quality:

TVs are ultimately about picture quality. Ultimately. How smart they are…great, but let’s face it that’s a secondary consideration. The ultimate is about picture quality and there is no way that anyone, new or old, can come along this year or next year and beat us on picture quality.

So, from that perspective, it’s not a great concern but it remains to be seen what they’re going to come out with, if anything.

TV’s are all about picture quality. Just like smartphones and tablets are all about specs, and PCs are all about price. Sure. I guess that’s why the Mac continues to grow as the PC industry dwindles, why the iPad is dominating the tablet industry, and why the iPhone is the most popular smartphone since, well, ever.
It’s this sort of thinking – that ecosystem, user interface, and ease of use should take a second seat to technical specs – that is dooming iPhone and iPad competitors to failure while Apple laughs all the way to the bank.
Sure Samsung. It’s all about picture quality. You go with that and see where you end up after Apple enters the scene.
