The Reno City Council has unanimously approved tax breaks for Apple to open two facilities in northern Nevada as part of its $1 billion investment over 10 years.
The City Council agreed to the city’s portion of a deal that includes $89 million in county, city and state tax abatements. Analysts say that’s a 79 percent reduction in Apple’s tax burden.
The electronics manufacturer said it will build a 350 acre data center east of Sparks, NV to house servers to be used for its cloud computing services. Plans also include a business and purchasing center in Reno’s Tessera District, a run-down area on the northeast side of the downtown area.
A report on the project said the data center would eventually employ up to 41 full-time employees and 200 long-term contract employees. Construction should create an estimated 580 temporary jobs.
Analysts predict the project would generate $343 million in economic activity over the next ten years.
The Las Vegas Sun reported that of the $105 million in tax revenues the project is expected to produce during that period, state and local governments would see just $16 million, because of various tax breaks and endorsements.
