Steam To Expand Beyond Games, Begin Offering Mac & PC Apps Starting September 5

Steam To Expand Beyond Games, Begin Offering Mac & PC Apps Starting September 5

It had been rumored, and now it’s been confirmed. Valve has officially announced that Steam will cease to be a game only selling platform from September 5, instead going into other app categories varying from ‘creativity to productivity’, Joystiq reports.

In addition, users will be able to submit their software suggestions to Steam Greenlight, a new service designed specifically for that purpose.

It will certainly take a lot to dislodge the Mac App Store as the leading marketplace for Mac apps, but with Steam already well established as a center for games, it might not take a lot to do the same for apps. Only time will tell, but I’m certainly looking forward to seeing exactly what apps Steam will have to offer (you can view some of the different categories in the above image).

Valve’s Mark Richardson:

The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games. They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.
