What Apps will Look Like On the Next-Gen iPhone’s 4-Inch Screen

Apple’s next iPhone has long been rumored to feature a taller 4-inch screen – and early this week it was discovered that iOS 6 can automatically scale itself for a taller screen. But how will apps and interface elements adapt to the new taller screen size?

9to5Mac researcher Sonny Dickson ran some apps through a modified iOS 6 simulator to find out, and was able to capture a number of very interesting screenshots. Among the most interesting are the Calculator and Voice Recorder shots below.

Apparently some of Apple’s native apps don’t scale very well, and end up being letterboxed! Newsstand also shows far more space at the bottom than it does when running on a regular-sized iPhone screen in iOS 5. It’s likely that some third-party apps also won’t scale well.

It’s worth keeping in mind that iOS 6 is still very much in beta. Apple is likely working on improving how iOS 6 handles app scaling. Otherwise, a lot of developers will have to significantly redesign their apps to work on Apple’s next-gen iPhone!
