China is now the Largest Market for Apple and Android Devices

China has passed the U.S. as the biggest market for iOS and Android devices. A new report says China has surpassed the U.S. for the total number of smart devices in operation.

AppleInsider:

Research firm Flurry tracked more than 2.4 billion anonymous, aggregated application sessions across more than 275,000 applications around the world, finding that the Chinese smart device market surpassed the United States market over the last month. In January 2013, China’s 221 million total active iOS and Android devices was about equal to the 222 million in the United States, according to Flurry.

In the span from January 2012 to January 2013, the U.S. added 55 million smart devices. In the same period, China added 150 million new devices. Almost 3 times as many.

As China has over four times the population of the United States, Flurry does not see the U.S. reclaiming the lead in device activations.

The UK comes in third place with 43 million activations.

India has a possible chance at eventually out numbering the activations China racks up, although they currently only stand at 19 million activations, and are not likely to mount a challenge any time soon.
