While Apple’s App Store revenue increased 15% over the course of the last six months, Google Play revenue increased 67%. In July alone, Google Play saw 11% growth, compared to the App Store’s 3%.

The United States provides most of the App Store’s revenue, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom. Japan and South Korea were the major contributors to Google Play’s coffers.

As far as top earning apps goes, Candy Crush Saga “crushed” the competition, earning top revenue honors in both the App Store and Google Play. It’s estimated that the app earns approximately $800K per day in revenue.

When just looking at paid apps, WhatsApp Messenger and Minecraft – Pocket Edition took honors. Despicable Me: Minion Rush, A freebie, took the crown for highest number of downloads, followed by Google Maps. (WhatsApp Messenger is free for the first year of use, then it is $0.99 USD per year.)

All data in Distimo’s report comes via its app store analytics tool AppIQ, which the company boasts tracks more than three billion worldwide downloads per quarter for developers.
