Apple Cuts Off Free 20GB of Extra iCloud Storage for Former MobileMe Customers

Apple Cuts Off Free 20GB of Extra iCloud Storage for Former MobileMe Customers

Apple warned you twice, and now it’s gone. As planned, Apple today has reduced the 25 GB of free iCloud storage given to former paid MobileMe down to 5 GB. If you had more than 5 GB of data being stored in iCloud, you’ll find that iCloud is no longer working for you.

From Apple’s email, via 9to5Mac:

If you exceed your storage plan on September 30, 2013, iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail will temporarily stop working. To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, reduce the amount of iCloud storage you are using or purchase a storage plan by September 30, 2013.

Much of the iCloud storage is usually taken up by iCloud Backups. You can delete those via “Settings” -> “iCloud” -> “Storage & Backup” -> “Manage Storage.”

If you’d like to continue to use iCloud as you have in the past, you can purchase additional storage via “Settings” -> “iCloud” -> “Storage & Backup” -> “Change Storage Plan.” You can then upgrade your iCloud storage plan to 10 GB ($20.00 / Year), 20 GB ($40.00 / Year), or 50 GB $100.00 / Year.

There are also other alternatives for those left without a place for their stuff, Dropbox (2 GB free), and Box (10 GB free) come to mind.

(UPDATE) – The plans mentioned above are in addition to the 5 GB of free storage. So, the 10 GB paid plan actually gives you 15 GB, the 20 GB plan yields 25 GB, and 50 GB plan allows you to access up to 55 GB of storage.)
