Review: Family Wall – Your Private Space for Friends and Family

While Facebook is a great place to keep up with family and friends, wouldn’t it be great to have a private place that works much like Facebook for you, your family and friends, but is completely private, and that you completely control? Enter Family Wall.

Overview

Family Wall allows you to set up a private social space dedicated to you and your family and friends. No one has access to the space you set up unless you invite them.

Much like Facebook, Family Wall allows you to post photos and videos, send messages, and post events to a timeline. You can also use it to keep track of contacts for the group. You can also create calendar events that everyone in your family will see. You can even create lists and to-dos and assign them to other members, and then be notified when the task is marked complete. Just the thing to keep track of chores in your family.

Members of your family can post messages directly to other members, who are then notified. All conversations can be browsed, using a thread view and everyone can participate in the conversations.

My wife loves to take photos of our new kitten and share them on Family Wall, she can do that and share them amongst the family group we have set up.

Family Wall also includes a check-in function where the location can be directly supplied by the phone or from a list of Points of Interest created by the family.

You can also set up a family directory that provides useful contacts for the family. (Babysitter, Uncles and Aunts, Grandparents, etc.)

I found Family Wall easy to setup and use. I setup the “family” in the app, and then invited my wife to “join the family” via an email sent by the app. After she logged in, we were able to share photos, send messages, and read each other’s posts.

Inviting a new member consists of simply entering the name of the member, and an email address to send the invitation to. The prospective member then receives an email, instructing them what to do next. The new member clicks a link to allow them to setup their login and password, and they then are given the opportunity to download the app. (Family Wall is available on both the iPhone and Android devices, iPad and Windows Phone versions are said to be on the way.)

Family Wall also offers a $1.99 per month premium service that gives you 10GB of storage, and allows saving of videos and HD photos.

Verdict

I found the whole idea of a private Facebook type area for my family and friends quite appealing. The app is easy to use, and if you’ve used a social app like Facebook in the past, you’ll be at ease with the interface of Family Wall in no time at all.

If you have family and friends that you’d like to keep in touch with, and also be able to privately share photos and videos, events, and even schedule get togethers, Family Wall is an app you should take a look at.
