Surprise! Someone is Suing Apple Over the ‘Undelivered Text Message’ iMessage Bug

When we first reported a few days ago that Apple was acknowledging a long-standing issue over the iMessage bug where former iPhone users were no longer receiving text messages from other Apple users after switching platforms, my first though was: “I wonder how long it will take for someone to sue.” The answer is: “Not too freaking long at all…”

Bloomberg (via BusinessInsider) reports that a customer has filed a lawsuit against Apple and is seeking class action status with a San Jose court.

The issue is how iMessage handles the switch from iPhone-to-iPhone messaging to traditional SMS text messages for users who move to another mobile platform. Apple automatically defaults to the iMessage platform, which doesn’t use SMS messaging to deliver messages, but if a contact switches to another mobile platform, the app doesn’t always recognize that, and switch back to SMS for delivering messages.

Users on either end aren’t aware that messages aren’t making it through, and the only semi-reliable method of fixing it is to ask contacts to delete and re-add them as a contact.

The consumer suing Apple over the iMessage snafus reportedly claims she stopped receiving messages from iPhone users after switching to an Android device. So where’s her money?

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the lawsuit.
