HBO to Offer Standalone Streaming Subscriptions in 2015

Cord cutters will be glad to learn that premium cable network HBO is planning to make their service without a cable subscription beginning in 2015. That information comes form a statement made by the network’s chief executive at the annual Time Warner Investors Conference.

AppleInsider:

The new offering will be a “stand alone, over the top” service that would work with “current partners,” CEO Richard Plepler said during the event, as noted by Re/code. That would mark a significant strategic departure for the network, which has previously stood staunchly on the side of cable providers.

HBO’s existing web streaming service, HBO Go, is available via Apple TV, however it does require an accompanying cable subscription. The HBO Go app is also available on iOS devices as well.

Premium content such as HBO, Showtime, and big-time sporting events have long been the reason those who would like to wean themselves from ever increasing cable and satellite bills have as yet been able to cut away from the tether of cable. Today’s comments from HBO’s head honcho gives a glimmer of hope to us all.
