Rumor: Apple to Return to Samsung For A-Series Chips in 2015

A new report says Apple frenemy Samsung will be producing the lion’s share of Apple’s A-Series custom processors used in the company’s popular iOS devices, beginning in 2015.

Rumor: Samsung to Return as Apple's Main A-Series Chip Supplier

AppleInsider:

The unconfirmed details shared on Monday by The Korea Times claim that Samsung will become the “primary supplier” to Apple for processors to be used in iPhones and iPads, taking back share from competing chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Recent estimates suggest that although TSMC is handling the lion’s share of A8 chip production, Samsung is still responsible for building 40 percent of the chips in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The alleged deal between the two companies is said to be worth billions of dollars, and will see Samsung producing chips for Apple at its South Korean, Austin, TX, and New York plants. 2016 would see Samsung producing 80% of the A-Series chips, with the remaining 20% to be fabricated by TSMC.

This rumor does conflict with earlier reports suggesting TSMC has been developing its relationship with Apple, and that the Cupertino firm was increasingly attempting to wean itself from Samsung as a supplier.
