How To: Save Photos From the Messages App in OS X

I’d hazard to say that most of our readers send and receive images and other media files via the Messages app on both iOS and OS X. However, while it’s pretty obvious how to save a photo to your iOS device in Messages, it’s not as obvious in the Mac version of the same app.

How To: Save Photos From the Messages App in OS X

Our demonstration file is a photo of the magnificent Ron Swanson/Swan Ronson.

Saving a photo or other media file from the OS X Messages app to your Mac’s hard drive goes as follows:

  1. In the Messages app, select the conversation thread you want to save the image from.
  2. Click and hold on the image you wish to save in the message thread, and then drag and drop the image to your desktop, folder, or hard drive you want to save it to.

That’s all it takes. Yup, I’m not kidding, and I only lie when I’m playing poker. This works with all media and file types, including images, pictures, animated gifs, audio messages, video files, even zip files.
