Pro Surfer Puts the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to the Surfing Safari Test

While it seems everyone these days can’t wait to take their newly purchased iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and dunk it in the nearest pool, or (YUCK!) toilet, pro surfer Kai Lenny showed some style and took both handsets out on his surfboard to see how they fare when pitted against the salty brine of the Pacific Ocean.

CNET:

Pro surfer Kai Lenny took both the new iPhones, as well as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, to see how they fared after some quality time with the salty, unforgiving waters of the Pacific Ocean. Lenny and gadget warranty firm SquareTrade attached the phones to the front of Lenny’s board along with a GoPro to capture the adventure…

As might be expected the last-generation iPhone 6s and 6s Plus fared the worst, after all, they’re just splash resistant, not water resistant like the newer flagship devices in the iPhone lineup. Both devices only lasted around 5 minutes before giving up the ghost.

The iPhone 7 proved to be the toughest of the bunch, standing up to a half-hour of water sports. (Heh, he said “water sports”), with only a little bit of muffled audio. The 7 Plus also took on a half-hour of the pacific’s salty goodness, but its audio took a heavier hit than its smaller sibling.

It should be noted that Apple discourages you from taking your new iPhone along on any Surfing Safari you may have planned. Even if the salt water doesn’t damage it, drop it, and even “Find My iPhone” isn’t going to help you recover it…
