Chinese-language paper Commercial Times claims Lite-On Semiconductor will provide the integrated chip components for Apple’s 10th Anniversary “iPhone 8,” that is expected to support fast wireless charging

According to Chinese-language paper Commercial Times, the Taiwan-based maker of discrete and analog IC components will supply the bridge rectifiers necessary to maintain efficiency in wireless power transmission and reduce thermal issues.

Lite-On has reportedly received half of the orders for GPP bridge rectifiers that will be used in the wireless charging system for the new iPhone models. This is according to the report’s industry sources.

The company’s share price on the Taiwan Stock Exchange rallied to its daily 10% limit following the news’ release. Lite-On responded to requests for comment by saying it doesn’t comment on customers or orders.

Apple is said to be working on a long-range wireless charging solution that does not require the devices to be as close to a charging source, or laid on a mat or charging module. Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn is reported to be testing wireless charging modules intended for this year’s new iPhones.

True wireless charging has long been a holy grail in the mobile device industry. Current solutions require a device to be laid in a specific place, such as a charging mat or module. It so far has been a solution in search of a problem, as the current methods are inferior to wired charging in at least one important way, as wired charging lets you continue to easily use the device while it charges.
