T-Mobile to Offer Prepaid MasterCard to Cover Sales Taxes on Smartphone Purchases

T-Mobile USA has announced a new promotion that offers customers a prepaid MasterCard with any new smartphone purchase, beginning February 1. The limited time deal will include a card worth 11.2% of the device’s retail price, which should cover the sales tax on the device. (Customers in Puerto Rico will receive a larger amount, 11.55%.)

The Un-carrier’s been leading a revolt against extra taxes and monthly fees on behalf of consumers. It all started with Un-carrier Next and T-Mobile ONE with taxes and monthly fees included. On top of that, T-Mobile is giving carrier customers a 2nd rebate this year with $150 for each and every line you switch to T-Mobile ONE up to 12 lines, for a limited time. Stack that on top of today’s news, and you’ve got yourself one heckuva reason to party. And, you won’t have to throw away a bunch of perfectly good tea to do it.

The deal is valid on any smartphone the Magenta Carrier offers, including the iPhone. As could be expected, the device must be activated with either a T-Mobile ONE or Simple Choice Unlimited 4G LTE plan. The prepaid MasterCard will arrive in 6 to 8 weeks and must be used within 30 days.

“You know the old saying about death and taxes? We’re taking on taxes first,” said John Legere, president and CEO of the carrier. “With Un-carrier Next, we went All In and included all those added monthly fees and extra taxes on T-Mobile ONE—all without changing the price. Now, we’re giving you back more than you paid in sales tax on ALL T-Mobile smartphones for you and your entire family. So what are you waiting for?”

The “Un-carrier” has been busy lately. The carrier recently announced its T-Mobile ONE plan price would have taxes and monthly fees included in one bottom-line price. They are also offering $150 for each and every line a new customer switches from another carrier to the ONE plan up to 12 lines, for a limited time.
