iPad 2 is top rated Consumer Reports tablet

As if you needed to hear this: Consumer Reports gave its highest marks to the iPad 2. This is a big improvement for Apple after last summer's iPhone 4 antennagate debacle, when the phone was left off the journal's recommended smartphones list.

In a press release today, Consumer Reports lauded Apple for leading the tablet market in quality and price but warned against future competition. I don't think Apple has much to be concerned about considering they are already on their 2nd-gen device while competitors are still scratching their heads with an Android tablet strategy. CR gave the 32 GB iPad 2 with 3G the highest marks in all 17 categories of grading criteria. The most striking endorsement, however, has to be that the $579 32 GB 1st-gen iPad with Wi-Fi beat every other tablet tested, except for the brand-new $800 Motorola Xoom, where it tied.

Finally the independent journal states "you get what you pay for" and warns consumers not to be tempted by lower-priced competitors. Antennagate what?

James first bit into Apple when his mom and dad bought an Apple IIe in 1986. He switched to Wintel in the mid 90s when Apple was in a tailspin and back again to an iBook in 2005 when things were looking brighter. Hopefully there is no turning back to the dark side now.
