Barnes & Noble Plans Updated Nook Tablet to Compete With iPad

Right on the heels of the software update that gave the NOOK Color apps and Android 2.2, Barnes & Noble Booksellers disclosed in a regulatory filing they will announce a new tablet on May 24th.

The NOOK Color, though weak in terms of processing power and battery life, is a mere $249. Barnes & Noble will likely beef up the current offering by possibly giving it a better processor, camera(s), and larger screen to compete directly with iPad and Amazon’s rumored tablet.

Barnes & Noble, the last remaining “big-box” US bookseller, is getting caught up in the tablet craze and it’s likely this could be their only savior. As a purveyor of dead trees, unsurpisingly the company’s stock is down 43% from a year ago and 73% during the last 5 years.
