Google Web Store is Worldwide, Attacks Apple with Tiny Five Percent Fee

Google just announced the worldwide availability of the Chrome Web Store and dropped a bomb by only charging developers a flat 5 percent fee vs. the notoriously high 30 percent Apple currently grabs (steals).

Engadget reporting from the Google I/O Conference today:

[Google] added in-app purchases to the mix — which it notes developers can add to their apps with “literally one line of code” — and it’s announced that it plans to “keep it simple” by simply charging developers a flat five percent fee instead of opting for some of the more complicated fee structures out there.

You will no doubt be familiar with the Chrome Web Store interface. It looks suspiciously similar to the program on my Mac that has a blue circular icon with eighth notes. Apparently, no app store is complete without Angry Birds which is featured at the top of the Chrome Web Store right now. You will now be able to kill pigs to your heart’s content on your new Chromebook.

Google seems to be pulling out all the stops this week by going after Apple with Music, Chromebook and now the paltry five percent developer fee on the Chrome Web Store.

Any statement, Apple?
