Apple Is World’s Largest Buyer of Semiconductors

Apple is now the world’s largest buyer of semiconductors, according to a report by IHS iSuppli. It’s no surprise given they have sold over 200 million iOS devices.

CNET reports:

According to the research firm, Apple spent $17.5 billion on semiconductors in 2010, representing a whopping 79.6 percent increase over the $9.7 billion it spent in 2009. That year, Apple was ranked third among semiconductor buyers behind Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Samsung.

Apple’s domination in the mobile devices market, and demand for chips, will no doubt continue given this autumn’s update to iOS 5 and corresponding iPhone 5/4S launch. The company reported in Monday’s WWDC keynote that Mobile Safari commands nearly two-thirds of the mobile browser market and they created a new category of device with the iPad, having sold 25 million of them in the first 14 months.

James first bit into Apple when his mom and dad bought an Apple IIe in 1986. He switched to Wintel in the mid 90s when Apple was in a tailspin and back again to an iBook in 2005 when things were looking brighter. Hopefully there is no turning back to the dark side now.
