Apple Release iMac Priced At $999 For Educational Institutions

We posted earlier today about Apple’s intention to launch a < $1,000 iMac for educational users in mid to late August. But it turns out we only had to wait a few hours instead.

Apple has today introduced an iMac priced at $999 ($200 less than the entry level iMac) and it’s aimed at those within educational institutions.

The spec is as follows:

  • 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core
  • 21.5-inch LCD
  • AMD Radeon HD 6750 with 256MB
  • 2GB RAM
  • 250GB Hard Drive
  • SuperDrive
  • OS X Lion

While it’s nice to be able to purchase an iMac for below $1,000, for only $200 more you could buy an iMac with twice the RAM, twice the HD space, and a far faster processor. What’s more, is the educational iMac spec doesn’t mention Thunderbolt support.

Is this a great deal, or Apple’s way of selling off their old inventory?
