Apple Discontinues AirPort Express Ahead Of Imminent Refresh

Apple has discontinued their current AirPort Express base station, according to a report from AppleInsider. The report suggests that certain Apple Authorized Resellers are reporting the device as discontinued as Apple prepares to release an updated second-generation device.

Some 3rd-party resellers such as DataVision are now showing the Airport Express as out of stock, including an Amazon listing that shows the AirPort Express as out of stock for 2-5 more weeks.

The report also indicates that Apple is preparing an update to AirPort Utility for Mac, version 5.6, which references a 2nd-generation AirPort Express in its developer release notes.

Apple has already updated their AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule devices this year, making certain changes that boost the signal strength of those devices up to 2.8 times that of the previous generation.
