Atari To Release Arcade Joystick For iPad

After Atari recently updated their Atari’s Greatest Hits iOS app (Free, App Store Link), MacRumors found a new and intriguing tidbit of information – the updated app now includes support for a new “Atari Arcade — Duo Powered” joystick.

The joystick, pictured above, appears to be a cheaper, simplified version of the iCade concept, and offers a more open layout. It also appears as though it would support landscape orientation a bit better than the iCade.

No real details are provided about the device, but it likely uses bluetooth to communicate with the iPad rather than the dock connector, due to Apple’s hesitation to license the dock connector for such purposes.

We’ll keep you updated as we here more about this cool new iPad gaming device.

*Update 9/6/2011

The Atari Arcade Joystick for iPad is made by Discovery Bay Games, who provides the above updated image. 9to5Mac has obtained information through a DVICE review revealing that the joystick will operate using the iPad’s 30-pin dock connector rather than Bluetooth, and will run for 8-10 hours using the iPad’s internal battery. Unfortunately, this also means that the device will only play games in portrait mode.

The Atari Arcade will be priced at just $60, and is scheduled to become available at Target stores on October 2nd. The device will hit Toys “R” Us and Walmart in November.
