Although Apple’s website initially indicated that the iPhone 4S would not be available unlocked until November, MacRumors reports that devices purchased for full retail price outside of a contract through Apple, Sprint or AT&T are already unlocked.
The prices for the iPhone 4S purchased off contract within the U.S. are $649 (16GB), $749 (32GB) and $849 (64GB). Reports have been streaming in from various customers who paid the full unsubsidized prize for their iPhone 4S, only to discover a message (pictured above) telling them that their device is in fact unlocked.
The unlocked iPhones are primarily useful for those that travel internationally.
