Review: Defen-G Astro – A Gorgeous Strategy Defense Game With a Unique Twist

There are quite a number of strategy defense games on the App Store, but none which look quite as good as Defen-G Astro ($2.99 App Store Link). Developed by Innodis, Defen-G Astro stands apart from other strategy defense games. Developers always have to add a unique touch to a genre to keep the game interesting and fun, and the developers at Innodis did just that.

Gameplay

Your goal in Defen-G Astro is to defend the Tower Of Adia from alien enemies which are attacking the tower to due to its power, which they strive to have for themselves. Besides the tower itself, you have to protect an artifact by placing your warriors in front of the tower.

When you first start the game up you’re introduced with a tutorial. I was about to skip it because I’ve played so many different strategy defense games that I didn’t think I’d need to go through the tutorial, but there are some things in Defen-G Astro that you need to know before you start.

The game features three difficulty levels: normal, hard, and crazy. I’ve played on all three difficulties – normal is fine if you just want to play casually. Hard is a bit challenging, but crazy is just that. It can get a bit frustrating. It took me a few tries to get past one of the stages.

There are 20 types of soliders which you can use to your advantage to help you defeat your enemies, which have to be unlocked as you continue through the game. As your soldiers get stronger via upgrades, so do the enemies. Each enemy you kill grants you a certain amount of money, depending on their hierarchy and skill. Besides having a wide selection of warriors, you can also use potions and guns to help you win your battles.

Graphics

As I stated earlier, one element of Defen-G Astro that sticks out in a big way are the graphics. Everything in each level is really bright and colorful. The graphics have a sort of cell-shaded look to them. Everything from the stages themselves to the soldiers and enemies look fantastic.

It seems the developers worked really hard on fine-tuning and setting the graphics apart from other strategy defense game. Not only do the graphics look great, but the animations of all the different enemies are really fun to look at. Everything looks crisp, especially on the iPhone’s retina display.

Sound

The audio in Defen-G Astro is very refreshing,  It flows freely with the gameplay, and it’s fun to listen to. It doesn’t sound repetitive at all. If you’re playing any game for a long amount of time, you might get discouraged with the music or the sound effects because they can sound repetitive after a while. That’s not the case with the audio in Defen-G Astro. The music never gets old, which is a big plus.

Verdict

Defen-G Astro is one of the most polished, addictive strategy defense games on the App Store. If you’re at all a fan of strategy defense games, don’t pass up on this gem. Defen-G Astro stands out that much more than any other strategy defense game, bringing a fresh take to a genre that’s getting a bit crowded. There’s a lot of gameplay value in this game. It’s addictive and it will have you hooked for hours.
