Unsold Playbooks Cost RIM $485 Million

Research in Motion has announced that unsold Blackberry Playbooks have forced them to take on a $485 million loss, reports AppleInsider. The Playbook sold just half a million units in its first quarter of availability, and that later dropped to 150,000 in the third quarter.

However, RIM remains committed, and they claim that lowering the price to just $199 has increased sales considerably. The fire sale began last month with up to $300 dollars being slashed off the original price.

RIM’s situation is in sharp contrast to Apple, which experiencing its strongest quarter yet. The Playbook has fallen short of expectation, and RIM will have to decide upon their next course of action, which could be as simple as taking it off the market.
