Apple is expected to integrate 802. 11ac ‘Gigabit’ WiFi to its devices by the end of this year, Apple Insider reports. The new standard achieves much greater speeds than the current 802. 11n WiFi by using two to four times the frequency bandwidth.
In addition to reaching speeds above 1 gigabit, the new standard guarantees a better networking range, improved reliability and more power efficient chips. Even though it hasn’t officially been approved as the new standard by the 802. 11 working group, it progressing faster than previous efforts in wireless networking.
Apple are credited with popularizing various WiFi standards with AirPort, the latter being a technology at the center of Apple’s devices today. Being able to download films onto your iPad in several seconds is going to be great, and will no doubt change the way we browse the web.
