Review: SailorBags Sailcloth iPad Sleeve

For a long time, I’ve been looking for a good way to protect my iPad from rain, scratches and children. I think I’ve finally found what I’m looking for. – the SailorBags Sailcloth iPad Sleeve ($27, link). Let’s go sailing.

Overview

The Sailcloth iPad Sleeve is a simple, yet very nicely designed iPad case. It’s main selling point is that it is water resistant because of the material it is made from – sailcloth. And the combination between simplicity, clean design and features strikes well for this product.

Look and feel

When you first get your hands on the Sailcloth iPad Sleeve, you meet quality. My initial thought when I heard about the case was that it was probably going to have a “plastic feel” to it, but no, the designers have put a lot of thought into it while developing.

The case comes in three different colors; blue, red and white, and the face that the case has such a simple design makes the whole experience even better.

The case has one big pocket for the iPad itself, but also a slightly smaller pocket where you can keep your iPhone, headphones or even your spare change. I am hesitating a bit about keeping my iPhone in that pocket – you’ll understand why later.

Usage

Like I’ve said earlier, the main purpose of the Sailcloth iPad sleeve is to protect your iPad from water while you are out to the sea (yarr!) or just walking around in England on a normal day.

So to find out if it really works, I walked outside with my Sailcloth iPad sleeve. And it worked. Although the rain poured down over my case, the iPad did not show any signs water damage even though the outside of the case was soaking wet. My concern though was regarding the small pocket on the outside of the case. Fortunately I didn’t have my iPhone in that pocket at the time, because that pocket had clearly leaked in water.

After a closer examination of the case I could clearly see that the extra inner protective cloth that you can see in the bigger pocket is not present in the smaller pocket. Lesson learned.

Verdict

The Sailcloth iPad Sleeve is overall a very nicely made iPad case. It doesn’t stand out of the crowd when it comes to design, but functionality-wise, it is groundbreaking. Despite the fact that the smaller pocket is not water resistant, this case is a home run.
