App Store Reaches 25 Billion Download Milestone

The moment has arrived. Late last night, Apple announced through their countdown website that the App Store has now reached a whopping 25 billion downloads, and the person who downloaded the 25 billionth app won a $10,000 gift card from Apple!

It’s been just under 4 years since the App Store was launched, making the 25 billion app milestone particularly impressive! What’s more, 15 billion of those apps have been downloaded since January of 2011, when Apple announced their 10 billionth app download! At this rate of growth, we could be celebrating 50 billion downloads this time next year! There are currently 550,000 apps available in the App Store

Congratulations, Apple! And congratulations, mystery winner (Apple hasn’t announced the result yet)! I wonder what the winner will do with all that iTunes credit…

Update:

Apple revealed the official winner of the $10,000 prize in their 25 billion app countdown Monday morning. The 25 billionth app was Where’s My Water? Free, and was downloaded  by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, who will receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.
