Apple Working on Enhanced iPad 3 Smart Cover With Rear Protection?

A new report from iLounge cites a “repeatedly reliable source,” claiming that Apple may introduce a new enhanced Smart Cover for the iPad 3 with a rear protective shell made from leather-covered fiberglass.

(1) The iPad Smart Case. Apple apparently has been working on a Smart Cover-influenced case of its own for the upcoming iPad. Said to be similar to Incase’s Magazine Jacket (and a host of subsequent alternatives that have appeared for the iPad 2), this new case has a folding magnetized Smart Cover on the front, and a rear shell made from fiberglass covered with PU/bicast leather. It’s unclear whether this case will be solely for the thicker new iPad or include backwards compatibility for the iPad 2.

The current Smart Cover will reportedly already work for the iPad 3. Nevertheless, rear protection has been a highly requested feature for the Smart Cover, and this new case should fit the bill perfectly. I really hope Apple does decide to release such a case!

While the idea of a revamped Smart Cover is certainly plausible, it’s nevertheless worth taking all such rumors with a grain of salt until more information becomes available. I suppose we’ll have to wait for Wednesday’s iPad event to be sure!
