iPad ‘WiFi + 4G’ Renamed to ‘WiFi + Cellular’ After International Data Controversy

Following complaints from countries such as the UK and Australia about Apple’s 4G marketing strategy with the new iPad, Apple has decided to change ‘WiFi + 4G’ to ‘WiFi+ Cellular’, the BBC reports. The change has already taken effect, with many of Apple’s international stores and ads featuring the new description.

Furthermore, even when 4G is available in those countries, the new iPad will not work with it due to different frequencies to the US. Apple blamed the mobile operators, claiming the different ways they refer to high-speed mobile technologies caused the problem.

The UK and Australia were two of the main countries to complain, and in the UK the Advertising Standards authority is said to be working closely with Apple ‘to ensure they adhere to the advertising code’. However Apple had already offered limited time only refunds to Australian buyers who felt mislead by the description, so the problem seems to be largely resolved.
