Report: Apple Will Provide an Adapter for 30-Pin to New, Smaller Connector

A report today says that Apple will supply an adapter for the iPhone 5’s smaller dock connector that will allow it to work with many of the accessories designed for the current 30-pin dock connector.

iMore:

We haven’t heard if one will be included in the box along with the iPhone 5, or will only be sold separately, but either way, come October, you’ll be able to get a new-to-old Dock adapter from Apple.

iMore got the information about the adapter from the same sources that supplied them with the information about the new dock connector, back in February.

Apple has previously done someting similar with the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter. There will most likely be some accessories that will be awkward or impossible to use because of size or shape, but numerous devices still should work properly when using the adapter.

The reasons for the smaller dock connector have been theorized by many. It’s been said that Apple needs more space inside the iPhone 5 to fit an LTE chipset, and the battery to go with it. Every bit of space matters when designing a device like this.

iMore also reports that the new, smaller dock connector will debut at the iPhone 5 event and be used in all iOS devices from there on.

So don’t panic, there’s no need to put your old accessories on eBay to start making money for new ones. If you don’t mind using an adapter for your dock connector accessories, you should be good to go.
