Review: Dubblen+ – A Fun and Unique Camera App For iOS

The great cameras on the iPhone allow app developers to create fun apps that take advantage of that, from an Instagram-like effects app to augmented reality. They can all make your camera do some pretty fun stuff, and another app just like that is Dubblen+, which allows you to take two photos and blend them into one, giving you the chance to fight with yourself or split your face into two. It’s certainly unique, so let’s see how it performs.

Overview

You’re immediately into the camera when the app opens, so you can get started right away. It’s not dissimilar to the built in Camera app layout wise, with the photo button in the middle.

You can add effects using the the lightbulb button, and those with an iPhone 4 or 4S can also adjust the Flash settings. The two buttons at the top also come in very handy: if you messed up one side of the photo, you can start over before saving when you’re ready.

In terms of actually taking the photos, you can either choose to split the photo horizontally of vertically, so you can be looking down at yourself or looking at yourself. Both work just as well, and it’s up to the photo you want to take which option you choose.

The biggest downside to this app is probably to do with how smooth and responsive it is. The buttons especially don’t respond to a light tap, and it just feels slightly slower than it should be when navigating around. While it’s bearable, it could be a lot better.

To end on a high though, there are sharing and saving options aplenty. You can save the photo within the app or to your iPhone photo gallery, and you can share all your photos to Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter, so that’s always good.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a fun app that takes advantage of the camera on your iPhone, then Dubblen+ could be a good candidate. You can certainly create some amusing photos, and the sharing options means you can entertain your friends and family as well. However the experience isn’t that great, with the buttons unresponsive and the navigation slower than normal (maybe the fact I was using a 3GS has something to do with it, but I doubt it). Don’t get me wrong, it works fine, but just slower than it should do.
