T-Mobile to Re-Introduce Unlimited Data Plans, Starting September 5

U.S. mobile carrier T-Mobile made an announcement this morning that should thoroughly excite their users, and may hint at something even more interesting – like finally being allowed to offer Apple’s iPhone to their customers!

AllThingsD reports:

Even as most of its rivals move away from totally unlimited data plans, T-Mobile is looking to get back in the game.

Starting Sept. 5, the No. 4 U.S. carrier will offer data plans that have full-speed service regardless of the amount of data used. It sells a number of “unlimited” data plans today, but it slows the speed once users hit a preset limit.

This is good news for several reasons – it will be great for T-Mobile’s current customers, for one. It also creates a second option for unlimited data in the U.S., as prior to this announcement, Spring was the only major U.S. carrier offering unlimited data.

T-Mobile’s unlimited plans will cost $30 a month, in addition to talk and text plans held by users. Even better about AT&T’s plans is that they won’t have caps of any kind. They will have full, un-throttled speed no matter how much data each user blows through. Users still on grandfathered unlimited data plans with AT&T or Verizon, on the other hand, have their speeds significantly reduced after using 2-3GB of datan a month.

But wait, there’s more! Considering that Apple is almost certainly planning a media event for September 12, T-Mobile’s timing is more than a little suspicious. It’s possible that T-Mobile is just banking on rumors and attempting to scape some customers before Apple’s event – but it’s also possible that T-Mobile may soon (finally) be allowed to offer the iPhone to their customers.

As always, only time will tell.
