Apple VP Phil Schiller: iPhone 5 Scratching is Normal, As With Any Aluminum Product!

9to5Mac reports on an email exchange between a 9to5Mac reader and Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller. The reader emailed Schiller complaining about scratching and scuffing on the black iPhone 5, after a report at MacRumors noted that the device could be scratched with a pin.

9to5Mac was able to verify the header of the email, and confirmed that it did in fact come from Schiller (or at least someone from Apple – perhaps one of his assistants).

Schiller:

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.

Aluminum scratches, apparently. What a shocker! This is separate from reports that some black iPhone 5s (including mine) are scuffed right out of the box, before they’re even turned on.
