Google Play Hits 25 Billion Downloads, Seven Months After App Store

After being rebranded Google Play only six months ago, the main Android marketplace has just surpassed 25 billion downloads seven months after the App Store, which reached the milestone in March.

Google Play currently has 675,000 apps, while the App Store has 700,000 as of September 2012, so you have to give Google credit for the way they caught up in the app war. However the App Store’s current downloads exceed 30 billion, so Google Play has a little way to go yet before overtaking.

Nevertheless, from an app distribution point of view, it’s now pretty close and it’s definitely a two horse race. It will be interesting to see exactly who triumphs, but it’s also worth noting that Apple definitely has the advantage from a tablet point of view regarding apps.
