Apple Likely to Discontinue iPad 2 Alongside iPad Mini Launch

Apple’s media event is next Tuesday, and with Apple expected to launch their iPad Mini, some are wondering what that means for the iPad 2. According to Evercore Partners analyst Rob Chira, Apple will likely discontinue it, as the third iPad price point won’t make much sense once the Pad Mini is released.

AppleInsider reports:

Rob Cihra with Evercore Partners said in a note to investors this week that he sees Apple phasing out the current iPad 2, because Apple’s overall vision calls for “clearer product tiers.” The prediction comes as Apple is expected to lower the barrier to entry of its iPad lineup by unveiling a new, smaller iPad next Tuesday.

Discontinuing the iPad 2 makes sense for many reasons. Considating Apple’s iPad line is a key factor – but the decision makes even more sense considering that the iPad Mini will probably be a lot like a smaller version of the iPad 2.

It’s possible that Apple will continue offering the iPad 2, just to grant users a size option when choosing a less expensive tablet – but it seems like a smarter move for Apple to focus on the iPad Mini, and promote the third-gen iPad to those desiring a 10-inch screen.

Frankly, I’ll be surprised if they don’t discontinue the iPad 2.
