Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Active Users

Early this morning, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social network now has over 1 billion active users! According to the announcement, the milestone number was achieved on September 14, 2012.

The entire announcement consisted of just four sentences:

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

It’s worth noting that Facebook’s “active users” figures do not account for fake accounts, or individuals with multiple accounts – it’s unlikely that a full 7th of the world’s population actually has a Facebook account. Even so, it’s an impressive milestone, and cements Facebook’s role as the largest social network to date!

Aside from the announcement, Facebook also posted a fact sheet filled with figures regarding how many of those users access the service from mobile devices, the media age of Facebook users, the total number of “likes” the social network has served up, and more.
