Parallels to Users: ‘Don’t Upgrade to Windows 8 Quite Yet”

Parallels, the maker of the software “Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac” has a warning for their users. If you’re thinking about upgrading your Windows virtual machine to Windows 8, you might want to hold off for awhile!

From the Parallels Advisory:

If you are planning on upgrading from an existing Windows OS to Windows 8, we strongly suggest waiting until Parallels has finalized testing the upgrade process. Upgrading now may damage your virtual machine, causing you to lose all your data, files and Windows applications.

Parallels says they’re working on completing their testing of the Windows 8 upgrade and will notify users via an in-product notification when it’s safe to upgrade to Windows 8.

If you’re planning on performing a full install of Windows 8 on a new virtual machine, the company says that should work just fine. They also supply a knowledge base article that will walk you through the steps of a new install in Parallels. They do say you’ll want to make sure you have the very latest version of Parallels Desktop 8 installed before you attempt the installation of a Windows 8 virtual machine. You can check to see if you have the latest version by going to the Parallels Desktop menu, and clicking “Check for Updates.”
