App Store Hits 40 Billion Downloads, Almost Half In 2012

What a year it’s been for the App Store. The figures released today by Apple are quite astonishing. Over 40 billion apps have now been downloaded, and 20 billion of those were in 2012. That’s a real explosion in numbers over the past year, and if things continue at this rate, we’ll be hitting 100 billion very shortly.

However it doesn’t end there. December was also a record breaking month, with over two billion apps downloaded, due to everyone receiving iGifts.

Apple SVP of Internet and Software services Eddy Cue:

It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.

Apple’s press release also highlighted Temple Run and Autodesk’s apps, which have performed impressively. The former was downloaded more than 75 million times just last year, and Autodesk’s apps have been downloaded 50 million times.

Who knows what 2013 will bring, but with the App Store going extremely strong, one thing is for sure – many more popular apps will be on the way.
