Dutch Horror Film Pits Evil Siri Clone Against Student

I’m normally not a fan of horror movies, but this Dutch one does seem intriguing. Called App (released March 4 in Holland) it shows what might happen if Siri were to turn evil, Cult of Mac reports. Of course Siri isn’t in the film, instead it’s the aptly named Iris, but the idea is the same.

Cult of Mac:

App is directed by Bobby Boermans, and the plot follows a psychology student who becomes addicted to her smartphone, apps and social media. While trawling the App Store, she dins an app called IRIS that begins to send cryptic messages to her, as friends and colleagues begin to die mysteriously all around her.

While the trailer is in Dutch, it is fairly easy to understand – think Final Destination and high tech combined. The only English spoken in the trailer I actually think sums it up pretty well: ‘What the f**k is this?’.

However it goes further. In this modern world of transmedia storytelling, we get background info on the story from all platforms – but App goes further. It gives you that info as you are watching the film, through the official app, to create a truly unique two screen experience.

It’s an intriguing concept, and as long as there are subtitles, this one is down on my ‘films to watch’ list. Without having watched the film, I can already pick a hole in the plot: how did Iris make it through the approval process?
