App Store 5th Anniversary Free Downloads Lead to 5.7 Million New Downloads of Infinity Blade II

Chair Entertainment’s popular game, “Infinity Blade II,” saw its rate of downloads triple, with nearly six million new users added in just seven days after being included as part of Apple’s App Store fifth anniversary promotion.

AppleInsider:

The success of the promotion was revealed by Chair publicist Laura Mustard in an interview with AllThingsD. She revealed that 1.7 million downloads occurred on the first day of the promotion, totaling 5.7 million by the end of the week.

Those downloads came in three times faster than usual for Infinity Blade II, one of the premier gaming titles available for iOS. The game usually costs users $6.99 to download.

The game was just one of a number of titles offered free of charge by Apple last week to celebrate the iOS App Store’s fifth birthday. A full list of the apps offered can be viewed here.

Although the game downloads were free, both Chair and Infinity Blade II publisher Epic Games should still profit, as the title also includes in-app purchases for players who don’t wish to wait for upgrades.

The free app had a “halo effect,” as downloads for the first “Infinity Blade,” ($5.99), increased by 2.5 times, and the $2.99 e-book title “Infinity Blade: Awakening” saw a 70% increase in downloads.
