Apple’s New Mac Pro Uses 68% Less Energy Than Previous-Generation

While the new Mac Pro may resemble a trashcan, it appears Apple has done its best not to trash the environment in the creation of its new addition to the Mac lineup. Apple has released an environment report [PDF] on its newly introduced Mac Pro, in which it details the environmental impact of its newest professional level workhorse.

From the report:

Mac Pro outperforms the stringent requirements of the ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for Computers Version 6.0, utilizing less than half the allowable energy limit. In addition, Mac Pro consumes 68 percent less power in idle mode than the previous-generation Mac Pro.

Apple states that the ultracompact designs of their products and packaging leads the industry in materials efficiency. Any reduced footprint of a product helps maximize shipping efficiency. Energy used during production, as well as the material waste generated at the end of a product’s lifecycle are also reduced.  Apple reports that the enclosure and thermal core of the Mac Pro is made of aluminum and copper, both materials highly prized by recyclers.

The Mac Pro’s packaging is also extremely energy efficient, consuming 82% less volume than the previous-generation Mac Pro, and is made with a minimum of 33% post-consumer recycled content.
