Theft of Apple Devices Fuel Continued Rise in Grand Larcenies in NYC

New data from the New York Police Department, (via The Wall Street Journal), shows the rising theft numbers involving devices such as the iPhone and iPad continued to fuel the ever rising numbers of grand larcenies last year in New York City.

MacRumors:

In detail, the data showed that Apple products were involved in 8,465 thefts and made up for 18% of all grand larcenies in the city, which rose 13% overall in 2013 from the year prior.

Criminals prefer Apple products to the extent that the NYPD specifically tracks thefts of that brand of mobile devices. The 8,465 thefts of Apple products last year is up from 25 grand larcenies involving such products in 2002.

Theft of iOS devices still proves to be a major issue facing law enforcement, despite various efforts by device makers to deter such thefts. Apple’s “Activation Lock” feature, which prevents stolen devices from being reactivated without an iCloud password, has received praise from various organizations since its introduction alongside iOS 7.
