Italian Apple blog iPhoneItalia has published screen shots of cross-platform messaging app WhatsApp’s upcoming Voice over IP functionality. The new feature is set to debut later this spring.
The pics show an in-call screen layout with a design similar to iOS 7’s built-in Phone app, sporting four circular buttons to allow the caller to mute the call, switch to a texting session, conduct the call via speakerphone, and hang up. iPhoneItalia reports that the display also shows the contact’s name, photo, and phone number.
Calls will add a “call in progress” bar to the display when a user switches to another app, to remind the user that a call is still in progress.
WhatsApp is not expected to charge for the new calling feature, as it attempts to compete with more established services such as Apple’s built-in iMessage, FaceTime, and FaceTime Audio calling.
WhatsApp was recently acquired by Facebook in a $19 billion deal.
The exact release date for the WhatsApp update has not been announced.
