Google Looks to Compete With Apple in Health and Fitness Market With “Google Fit”

It seems Google will be entering the health and fitness fray, as Forbes reports that Google will be making a health related announcement at its upcoming Google I/O conference. Apple announced its Health app for iOS 8, and its accompanying HealthKit platform for developers, at WWDC 2014 just short of two weeks ago.

Forbes, via MacRumors:

Google Fit will aggregate data through open APIs, instruction sets that allow apps to share information, and will also announce partnerships with wearable device makers at its I/O conference, Forbes understands. One source with knowledge of Google’s plans said Google Fit would allow a wearable device that measures data like steps or heart rate to interface with Google’s cloud-based services, and become part of the Google Fit ecosystem.

Forbes goes on to say the it is unclear if Google will be integrating Google Fit into its Android operating system by default, or if it will be handled by a standalone app.

Forbes speculates that Google’s previously announced Android Wear project could integrate with Google Fit, with the ecosystem acting as a hub for integrating data from Android Wear devices, in addition to other products.
