New Apple TV Beta Drops Support for Second-Generation Apple TV

Bad news for owners of second-generation Apple TVs. It’s possible that the upgrade train will no longer be stopping at your device to drop off upgrade goodness. The latest software beta for the Apple TV indicates it’s only compatible with third generation and above devices.

Redmond Pie:

the Apple A4 processor keeping the second-gen Apple TV running is almost technically identical to that of the iPhone 4, and with the iconic 2010 handset officially off the shortlist of devices getting iOS 8, it should come as very little surprise that the Apple TV 2 will also follow suit.

The current generation Apple TV runs on the Apple A5, the same processor found in the iPhone 4S and iPad mini. A much rumored upgrade to the Apple TV should be on the way soon, so the device’s processor will assuredly receive an upgrade when the new device debuts.

It should be noted that this is, of course, beta software, and the hardware requirements for it could certainly change before the final release. However, if it stays this way, it will be a nice excuse for all of us with older Apple TV’s to take the upgrade leap.
