Sony to Challenge Apple TV With $99 PlayStation TV – Debuts This Fall

It looks as if another Apple TV competitor will be joining the battle for king of set-top streamers this fall, as Sony is preparing to release their set-top box, the PlayStation TV. It will retail for $99, or $139 bundled with a PlayStation 3 controller. (Yes, of course it plays games, DUH!)

The device, already available in Japan, was formerly known as the PlayStation Vita TV. Sony announced the device at its E3 press conference on Monday,

The PlayStation TV will connect to any HDTV set, and will allow gamers who already own a PlayStation 4 to play PS4 games on that television, even though the PS4 is connected to another set. The device will also play Playstation Vita games.

The hardware will also work with games that were available on older PlayStation consoles. Sony says a total of 1,000 games will be available at launch.

While the focus of the PlayStation TV will be on gaming, it will include streaming video features, including content from Hulu, Netflix, and similar services.

Let’s hope this will get Apple’s ass in gear to introduce a new gaming-capable Apple TV in the coming months.
